Finding time to do jobs you hate is pretty hard, isn’t it? But you can succeed at getting those nuisance tasks accomplished, even done well.
Making the Jobs You Hate Look Good in 5 Steps:
- Take five minutes to list jobs you hate and never get around to.
- Estimate how long you think each one will take.
- Select three of these projects that take roughly the same amount of time to complete.
- Make sure you start with the shortest task first.
- Now set aside a block of time in which you commit to doing one of those three tasks: the one that you dislike least is a good place to start.
Have you noticed how suddenly the “least lousy” one looks pretty good, compared to the jobs you dislike even more?
Minds work through comparisons. Anything weighed against something far worse achieves the relative glamour of top billing. After all, you are utilizing it to avoid the other two distasteful tasks.
In fact, you may even enjoy the activity, because in your mind, you may be thinking, “This sure beats doing the other 2 jobs!”
And this can help you do a better job.
Now you know how you can put procrastination to work for you. Harness the enthusiasm you feel to do anything except your most unappealing project as a way to get another task completed.
Success builds on itself. If you like the results, use this formula again. Soon you will be ready to tackle the longer tasks. Since you mobilized yourself by constructively “converting your aversion”, congratulate yourself for what you accomplished.
